5Increased Mood, Decreased Anxiety  Apr 01, 2012
By Jessie Garcia
Amazing product with no side effects as far as I can tell. It has increase my positive mood. Lessened my anxiety. And kept me on track with healthy habits, a good nights sleep being one of these that I've never been able to get without knock out sleeping pills prescribed by the doctor.

I also consume phenibut with it, 5-HTP Powder 10 Grams + FREE Primaforce Phenibut Powder 100 Grams which seems to add the overall effects, not sure which one is responsible for my increased mood and positive thoughts by my reading has led me to believe that they work as catalysts to each other and the fact that they are both safe and free of negative side effects makes has convinced me that these may be the best natural products currently available for their intended purposes.

4It worked for me  Jul 12, 2007
By my two cents "my two cents"
After reading a book called "The Mood Cure" I started taking this supplement and I can definitely tell something is different. I'm doing some things I haven't done in years like go to the store by myself. It's not a drastic, dramatic change as if I wake up being a different person, but I am definitely able to take more positive steps with my anxiety with this product. "The Mood Cure" and other websites advocated taking like 300 mg a day. I took 150 mg in the beginning and I started feeling more anxious. I cut the dosage to 50mg a day and that works for me. On a sidenote, they say one of the side effects of this amino acid is that it cuts your hunger for carbs. I have found this absolutely true for me. I wasn't even looking for this kind of perk but I noticed a dramatic reduction in my carb cravings. If you read the book, you'll understand why. Anyway, overall, I believe this product can help alleviate anxiety.

5Nature's Anti-depressant  May 30, 2010
By Jon Schwabach "Corner Book Shop"
I've been studying neurochemistry for many years, and i am not a doctor. This is just some simple chemistry. Griffonius is 40% 5-htp by weight. 5-htp is a form of tryptophan commonly created by stomach bacteria. If you do not have depression, anxiety, or insomnia, this is probably not for you. In my experience, 5-htp is vastly superior to all pharmaceutical anti-depressants. Depression is a lack of serotonin, it's really that simple. 5-htp is the serotonin precursor. Insomnia is a lack of melatonin, and serotonin is the melatonin precursor. Anxiety is caused by heightened cortisol and adrenalin, commonly brought on by a serotonin deficiency, but can be brought on by other things.

5-htp metabolizes into Serotonin in the brain, but not in the blood. If anyone gets serotonin syndrome from this supplement, I think it's very probable they took a metabolite with it. You should look up anything you are taking at the same time for an interaction, and definitely avoid taking anything at the same time as serotonin that contains the warning "do not take with anti-depressants/SSRIs." 5-htp is not an SSRI but the effect is much like a very potent SSRI.

Excessive use of 5-htp can lead to a down-regulation of the 5-ht1a memory receptor, while this is by no means a reason not to take it, measuring your dosage and time of use is a good idea. I humbly suggest that no one exceed 200mg per day without an okay from their physician, and that they not take it at this level long term, like for more than a year. Also, if you have a physician and take other medications or are considering taking other medications, you must tell your doctor that you are taking 5-htp.

I know of now reason why this product should cause nausia or gallstone like pain. It's a pretty simple anti-depressant and shouldn't do anything outside of the brain. It is also an amino acid, so it will potentially interact with other medications.

5VERY GOOD MEDICINE FOR THOSE OF US WHO NEED IT!  Aug 28, 2005
By Heather L. Parisi "Robert and Heather Parisi"
As 5-HTP goes, this is good stuff and reasonably priced. It does seem to cause vivid dreams and it seems to have the effects it is supposed to. However, it should be noted that although you need take only 1-2 capsules for insomnia, the short half life of 5-HTP from "GRIFFONIA SEEDS" necessitates rather frequent dosing for depression and appetite suppression, usually 4x per day and attention needs to be paid to the timing of doses with other amino acids. Serotonin syndrome may also be an issue for some.

Whereas many important issues are not certain or resolved regarding 5-HTP dosage and usage, it does seem to do a lot of good when used appropriately. Naturally a lot more can be said and books have been written on 5-HTP. It is a product that must be used with considerable care and professional medical monitoring is advisable due to the serious conditions it is used for and its effects on human brain chemistry. [Depression, Obesity, Insomnia] Nevertheless after taking it for 3 years I can say that I have experienced no negative side effects. Also, I have noticed reduced cravings for sweets, less anxiety in social situations and have slept better than I ever have. There has also been no sign of 5-HTP being habit forming in my experience.

If you are considering using this product for anxiety or sociophobic disorders the same company [NOW] makes a 200mg dosage combined with the amino acid L-tyrosine. Many have found the addition of 250 mg of L-tyrosine to be most helpful and the product still retains all of its other characteristics.

4A nice subtle effect.  Jan 10, 2007
By henny
I bought Now's 5-HTP with the intention of using it as a sleep aid. I found that it is best taken in the morning as the effects are calming instead of sleep inducing. It will smooth out the rough spots in your day and make time slide on by without tension or anxiety. I sometimes take this along with melatonin for sleep and boy the two combined can really give you a plesent and recuperative sleep. I recommend trying it.
