A "Cure" to Depression? No, sorry but pretty darn close... Mar 11, 2012
By M. Finn As someone who is self-employed, without insurance, and has been diagnosed several times with clinical depression I've been motivated to do a lot of research on natural remedies to coping with this "illness" rather than go the RX route. I've taken probably 15 different "cures" or combination of such over the past 5 years and have found a combo that works for me. Not a cure, just something that makes the low times shorter and less intense. Which to some people, is a cure in itself.
The first thing I found to be effective is L-tyrosine (hence the review), NOW Foods L-Tyrosine 500mg (120cap) is an amino acid that your body can create on its own or get from food. It is a precursor to several neurotransmitters, including epinephrine or adrenaline, norepinephrine and dopamine. Two of these compounds, epinephrine and norepinephrine, are commonly called stress hormones because your body releases them as part of the mechanism that helps you deal with stress. As a result, increasing your levels of L-tyrosine may help you cope with situations that might trigger anxiety.
I also take GABA now-a-days and can recommend it as I've taken it alone too with very decent results, 100 Grams (3.53 Oz) GABA Bulk Powder Gamma Aminobutyric Acid. GABA is a natural chemical called a neurotransmitter, made by nerve cells, which modifies the behavior of these cells and allows them to communicate with each other. Its general effect is to lessen activity of nerve cells, inhibiting their excitation and generally lowering brain activity in nearby areas. Low levels of GABA have been identified in several psychiatric conditions, including anxiety and depression. A deficit in GABA production is a cause of major depressive disorder, and that restoring these levels is likely to reverse the condition. Life isn't perfect, and I still do have the ocassional "episode", as my wife likes to call them. But adding these two supplements along with a healthy diet and exercise has made the world look much brighter through my eyes.

I'm impressed after taking this for 1 week. I'm more awake and not as tired as before. I get about 6 hours of sleep and I am good to go, whereas before I would need like 10-11 hours and will still get tired. I have a my tsh on my lab was high, but not diagnosed as hypothyroidism yet so I heard about this and to give it a try and boy am I blown away. I am more energetic and feel like a person instead of a zombie. Recommend it.

Helpful Sep 20, 2011
By Chris R I've been taking two capsules a day for the past 2 weeks and it has helped in several ways by increasing my energy levels, boosting my concentration and memory, controlling anxiety and perhaps helping out in the romance department ( I think). I now look forward to the helpful effects it provides every day.

All things to all people Jun 26, 2011
By Lynn A Detwiler The reviews for this product seem to be contradictory, so I thought I'd try to add a little clarification. And let me state for the record that I am not a medical professional of any kind. This is just my own experience.
The literature I have found on L-Tyrosine indicates that it supports your thyroid. Your thyroid makes hormones that control just about everything else in your body. So, if you're not sleeping, sleeping too much, depressed, anxious, whatever, L-Tyrosine may be able to help.
In my case, I have had terrible problems with depression and lethargy for my entire life. I would be fine one minute, and weeping uncontrollably the next. Sometimes I would sleep for 14-16 hours straight. Sometimes I couldn't sleep at all. I also had unpredictable asthma attacks and occasional paralyzing anxiety. Obviously, something was wrong, but I've been tested for everything under the sun. Other than allergies to trees and grass, no doctor has ever been able to find anything "treatable." And I have to say that being on antidepressants was worse for me than the depression itself.
Then a "health food nut" at work suggested I try L-Tyrosine. The cliche "it changed my life" doesn't even begin to cover it. I have energy now. I sleep better, but only 8 hours or so at at time. My mood swings are gone. I haven't had an asthma attack in years, and even my allergy symptoms are less severe. I've lost weight. My menstrual cycle has evened out. I've become more productive in my hobbies, and I've missed a lot less work. All of this happened after I started taking just 500mg of L-Tyrosine a day. And I know it's not the placebo effect where something works only because you think it will. If I forget a dose, everything goes downhill in a big hurry! I've been taking that same dose for more than 7 years, and it's just as effective today as it was after the first week.
I don't know that everyone will have the same dramatic results, but I have friends and family with similar stories. Somehow this stuff just works better than anyone could imagine, and I haven't found a single bad side effect either in my experience or in the literature. And, best of all, it's a lot cheaper than just about anything else you can get to treat all the problems I've had. I recommend L-Tyrosine to absolutely everyone I know, and this brand, NOW L-Tyrosine, is the one I've found to be most effective.

This is a secret. Sep 16, 2009
By David Liverman Anybody that has trouble with anxiety should know about this. You know who you are and the problems this can cause in your life.
This product is a sleep/dream enhancer. Say goodbye to light, erractic sleep. It also takes me down a notch during the day. It also helps with terrible panic attacks. I take the pill twice a day. The doctor does not believe me but that is his problem.
Hope this is of help.
