Red Yeast Rice is a unique natural product native to China that's been used in Asian traditional medical systems since approximately 800 A.D. It is produced by the fermentation of red yeast (Monascus purpureus) with white rice. Red Yeast Rice Extract contains a number of cholesterol-lowering compounds known as statins, among them lovastatin, the same active ingredient that's in Mevacor. Other red yeast compounds are similar to those in other cholesterol medications, such as Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Zocor (simvastatin).

Good Company with 800# they answer Jan 27, 2012

I bought some bottles of this and called the company Good N Natural because I had a few questions after reading about this on Wikipedia. They answered the 800 number on the bottle and were pretty knowledgable and polite. I wanted to know if there was a measurement for a percentage on monacolins which appears to be a key ingredient. The gentleman pointed out they are not allowed to measure this and I believe it is because the FDA does not allow it. The supplement industry as everyone probably knows is very regulated by the FDA.

Wikipedia "Red Yeast" if you want to learn interesting things about it and its potential to lower cholesterol and of course talk to a doctor first before using it. I remembered after ordering this that I am allergic to yeast (I somehow did not make the connection to red yeast) so I will give this supply to a friend. I do have one friend who lowered his cholesterol by about 30 points and loves it so basically the review is because the company has great customer service especially for being so low priced.
